Cool forest light rolled on wisps of wind. A hooting of an owl came from a nearby tree, and a crow called. A strong, tan dog stomped through the ferns, her tail held high, wagging in satisfaction. From behind her, two more dogs followed. A black dog, and a small white dog. Alpha bent her head to sniff the ground, and rumbled in satisfaction again. "Coal, take a shot over there. I think I smell prey." The black Hunt dog nodded. The little white dog followed. "I'll keep watch over him." Alpha nodded away the little patrol dog, then raced away to try somewhere a little further off. She did not want to spoil their hunt. Stopping beside the border with the outer city, she raised her head to scan the area. Every day, she'd found the same scents her from the Fierce Dog Pack. Wind buffeted her fur as she took in the scene. The cliff, a little further off, and bushes to her right. The undergrowth was thick on the outer layer, but much thinner on the inside. A perfect spot for prey. Delicately, she nosed herself into the fronds. Sniffing intently, she soon located a rabbit, gnawing on a bush. She stayed perfectly still. A heavy weight dropped on top of her, and forced her to one side. Alpha opened her jaws in the beginnings of a warning howl, to alert Coal and Branch she was in trouble, but a large paw slammed into her muzzle, forcing it into the earth and cutting the call abruptly. More shaped poured out around her, filing low in a circle. Fierce Dogs.
"Alpha?"
Branch's voice carried through the woods. Alpha writhed wildly under the weight, thrusting out her paws, but the weight remained intact. More dogs leaped onto her limbs, keeping her from moving. They smelled as if they'd rolled in the bracken for hours. The calls of her packmates died away as they left. No!
Growling viciously, she tried again at freeing herself, but it was no use. A slender creature parted the ferns to stand alongside the dogs, pricking pointed ears and a long bushy tail. A fox.
"I tell you I find her." the fox barked to the lead fierce dog. The dog acknowledged it with a cold nod, then gestured to a dog in the outer ring. "Get it."
The dog dragged something forward. Black mesh arranged in a loop, with tendrils on either side. Clasps finished off each tendril. One of the dogs who had held her down left to aid the other, and together, they picked up the mesh from either end of the tendril. They dragged it towards her, and the paw on her snout lifted slightly. Trying again to howl, she gagged as the mesh thing slipped over her muzzle, tightly fixing her jaws shut. A click just behind her head told her that whatever this thing was, it had been secured tightly. The lead dog snapped his head around, indicating his patrol to follow. The two dobermans on her back leaped off, each grabbing her scruff. She winced as their teeth pierced the skin. She kept trying to escape, but they had too good a hold on her.
"Alpha?!"
Coal!
Narrowing her eyes, she glared daggers at the leader, who gave her a look of arrogant satisfaction.
"They wont find you." he snarled quietly. "We have." he trotted away. "Lets go."
