Big black paws trotted through the leaves as some were on the ground, it was clear that the time of the sun rising so early was beginning to die out. He sniffed the ground trying to see if he could find anything worth taking down or just have a look at. Coal preferred it out here instead of being back at camp, he enjoyed being with his pack but it was sometimes boring and being in the forest was a lot nicer anyway. He admired the views he had seen from the cliff and just the scents of the forest around him. His jet black coat helped him to hunt in the shadows, he could camouflage in the darkest of places and on the rocks. His hazel eyes peered round as he raised his head to sniff the air and rotate his ears around to listen for even the slightest sound of snapping twigs. he didn't hold a proud posture, he never did. He wasn't that type but he did change his appearance as best he could whenever someone important or just beautiful swung by.

Branch raced through the forest, his tongue lolled behind him as he pounded on the leafy floor. The twittering of birds and the warm air around him filled him with a sense of endless energy. His curly hair didn't break in the air as he ran. He picked up the scent of the Hunting Dog, Coal, and he veered in the direction of the scent. After a few moments, he saw a splash of black for and lunged. With a excited volley of barks, he landed on the much larger dog. "Hey Coal!" he yipped happily. Wagging his tail, he balanced precariously on Coals side and yipped again.

As his head was slightly raised from the sniffing in the air his ear swerved to the side when he heard frantic movement of paw steps moving towards him. Snapping his head to the side to see an excited dog running at him in full speed, it was too late to move out of the way. He hit the ground with a thud. Shaking his head he then looked up as he was on his side and saw the Cocker spaniel, branch. he was a patrol dog so he was more built up of muscle than himself. " Hey, Branch " he said in a bit of a confused way, he had basically run out of nowhere and tackled him. It just hit him that he had disrupted his hunt, well if he had caught the scent of something then he would have. " Listen buddy, Cou- could you just- just stand off of me for a moment " he said as he moved his paws to allow himself to stand back up.

Branch barked in excitement, "Sure thing Coal!" he hopped neatly off of the Black hunt dog. "Any luck yet?" he asked. "I have! I chased away a tan chase-dog a few moments ago! You should've her squeal!" He pranced in excitement. "It was so great being able to use my new skills for the first time!" He reared up on his back paws and mock- boxed the air, then fell backward into the dirt with a grumble of pleasure.

He stood back to his paws and shook his pelt from the leaves and soil on the ground." well, um- not yet but everything around is probably gone now" he didn't want to ruin his happiness so he didn't directly state the reason for his explanation. looking at the excited dog, He watched as Branch was clearly excited by his accomplishment. " Really? your taking your job well then " he tilted his head as he was happy to see Branch's face and his movement to fall on the ground with a happy bark. " How's the patrol business anyway? " he sat down looking at him.

Branch sat up again, spots of dirt, moss, and bark falling off or staying in place on his coat. "SO dull, unless I come across a stranger anyway." he scratched behind his ear. Distracted again, he looked around, and pointed with a single paw. "You know that a wild turkey is drinking in that water over there right?" He held back a flurry of yelps to lick his chops. The stupid bird was right in view. "Are we going to chase it?" he asked the senior dog quietly. He fell into a long trained crouch and looked at coal expectantly.

Coal looked at the turkey from a distance next to coal. How could he not hear the bird, his ears were massive. He allowed himself to get too distracted. He looked back at branch who was seemingly eager to catch the creature. As nice as Coal was he had been hunting a while and his role of the pack was to hunt but Branch's role was to patrol." Listen buddy, you're going to stay here and i'll grab it ok? " He felt bad for saying it to him but he did not specialize in that sort of thing and it was best to keep it that way. Plus, Branch was only young and it was most likely to end with the bird escaping before Branch could even make two steps towrds it. He crouched low to the ground and moved to the side where the birds back was exposed.

Branch sat down. "Alright, Coal. Whatever you say." He watched the hunt dogs careful movement and tried to mirror it on his own. Then he slapped his paw on his nose in self punishment. He wasn't allowed to hunt when he was on Patrol.

He drew in closer. His body low the the ground and his large ears facing forward to watch the unsuspecting bird. Finally he leaped forward with his jaws wide open to snatch the bird. he knew how to take down birds, swiping his right paw to hit the birds wings to it would go off balance in flight. As it started to turn to the right, its right wing was not spread out like it should be. With a quick and final swoop he latched his teeth onto the feathery creature shook his head just to make sure it was dead. Panting, he trotted over to branch and dropped the bird on the ground.

Branch skipped happily at the site of the dead bird. "Way to go, Coal!" He barked happily.

Coal barked as a thank you to Branch. He sat down again, still breathing out a sort of mist as it rose up to the air and vanished. An idea hit him, " Hey, i know that you're on patrol but should I tag along with you? You'd be bored without me " he chuckled. He had never been on patrol before apart from the only reason he left camp was to hunt. It was his job.

Branch shuffled his paws. "I don't know, I want to Coal, I really do, But what if the Alpha finds out? You know how strict she is.." He looked up, "We'd have to sneak around."

Coal was completely relaxed about the idea of it. He wasn't really worried about it. " yeah, come on buddy, sneaking around can be fun too ya' know " He said with a relaxed tone. Even if they were caught he could always explain that they just bumped into each other when they were both doing their duties. " Seriously, What's the worst that could happen? " Plenty could happen, especially if the Alpha found out or if anyone else saw them " Don't answer that " he said as he looked away. it wasn't a crime against the rules of the pack... Was it? Oh well, Branch looked like he could do with some company and besides, Coal wanted to experience what it was like on a patrol.

Branch gave a terse nod. He supposed there couldn't be any real harm in patrolling together.. "All right, let's do it. But remember, I'M leading." He stood taller despite his short stature to the larger dog. "It's my job Coal." Not waiting for the bigger dog to stop him, he ran off again to the border. He felt empowered leading a patrol, guarding the border. After several minutes of running, he fell to a stop. "We start at the border here," he barked to Coal while staring at the ground. "And then we move along the entire edge until dusk."

he watched Branch run off, he partly wanted to go on the patrol to make him feel more 'in power' in a way. It was nice to see it was already taking effect. He grabbed the turkey he had killed and them trotted off to follow Branch through the forest. He slowed down and crouched where he could listen closely to what he has to say and what he needed to be expectant of on this patrol. He was surprised to hear that they do this till dusk but to be honest he did the same nearly every day, well in fact every day unless he was really lucky. He nodded at each word he had to say, it was important that he understood. He felt a slight joy in himself that he got to experience this but he felt bad earlier for not letting his friend kill the turkey and yet Branch lets him go on the patrol with him. He had to make sure that he didn't get Branch in trouble.# for this.
